Event Details
The Liz Jones Trio are one half of the Six-piece Rock Band, Liz Jones and the Broken Windows, which has built a devoted following and taken the Edinburgh Rock scene by storm, with its repertoire of Blues, Southern Rock, Country, Folk and Jazz, almost entirely self-written by Songwriter and Lead Vocalist, Liz Jones.
The Trio, who play stripped-back versions of the Broken Windows songs, are Liz Jones herself, on vocals and guitar, multi-instrumentalist and percussionist, Suzy Cargill, formerly of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, together with, on electric guitar, vintage Axeman and founding member of the legendary Blues”N” Trouble, John Bruce, now part of The Allman Brothers Project tribute band.
Songwriter, Liz Jones, the Voice and Lungs of Broken Windows, originally from South London, via Cumbria, has now established a creative base in Edinburgh. Her wry, idiosyncratic and often personal lyrics come from an unconventional life and a “peace and love” hippy spirit. Her powerful vocals have been compared to those of both Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield.

Americana/Indie Folk Band, The Hackles, from Oregon, are returning to Montrose Playhouse, by popular demand, after a cracking Gig in January 2023. During that brief Tour last year, The Hackles made their U.K. debut in Trio format at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, winning universal praise, following a sold-out headline show. The Band return in May for a much longer U.K. Tour over the entire month.
The Hackles began as a Duo of Kati Claborn and Luke Ydstie, core members of the band, Blind Pilot, impressing with their sumptuous vocal harmonies and writing skills. The Hackles have now become a Trio, augmented by Fiddler and vocalist, Halli Anderson, of the band, River Whyless.
Hailing from Astoria, the oldest settlement in Oregon, west of the Rocky Mountains, on the big Columbia River, The Hackles are close friends and collaborators of Astoria personality and American Folk Hero, Michael Hurley, with whom they perform on a regular basis. The Hackles contributed a track on the Michael Hurley tribute Album, “Snockument”, which was issued in 2021.

As part of our programme to celebrate the Fortieth Anniversary year of Montrose Folk Club, we are delighted to present a Concert by Blue Rose Code, playing as a Trio.
Blue Rose Code channels and intensifies the spirit and vibes of Van Morrison and John Martyn. In reviewing his January 2023 Concert at Celtic Connections, The Times referred to ” A Set of almost religious intensity and sincerity. Blue Rose Code makes widescreen Soul in the spirit of Van Morrison, and was full of the holy fire of Live performance.”
Ross Wilson, aka Blue Rose Code, writes songs straight from- and to- the heart. They address universal themes of love, loss, home and faith in a deeply personal way and seamlessly blend Folk, Americana, jazz, Soul and pop influences into something, which is truly unique.
Tickets for this Concert by a superb Live Performer are £20 each (there is no Booking Fee) and may be purchased beforehand by emailing brucekenneth130@gmail.com. They may also be available to purchase for Cash at the Door.

Based in Seattle, Massy Ferguson have, for more than a dozen years, operated on both sides of the Country-Rock divide, carving out their own brand of Americana along the way.
With a touring history, which spans nine different countries, they are torchbearers of a sound, which is distinctly American; you can call it Rock & Roll roots. Massy Ferguson’s songs always sound Cinematic, like a Springsteen-worthy portrayal of blue-collar life in America’s northwestern pocket.
The Band is based on the songwriting partnership of bass-playing frontman, Ethan Anderson, and guitarist, Adam Monda, whose songs spin stories of small town adolescence, big-city adulthood, and the long miles of highway, which stretch between. The Band also includes Fred Slater on keyboards and Alfonso Luna on drums. In Great Divides and Joe’s Meat and Groceries, the Band’s two latest Albums, the songwriting is stunningly simple, like the literal minimalism of Ethan Anderson’s favourite authors, Raymond Carver and Cormac McCarthy.
Admission to the Massy Ferguson gig is £12.50, payable in Cash at the Door, or tickets can be purchased beforehand by emailing brucekenneth130@gmail.com.

After starting out as a Session Musician in Dublin, collaborating with U2, Sinead O’Connor and Mary Black, Eleanor McEvoy has been Ireland’s leading female Singer Songwriter for almost three decades.
She initially came to prominence as the composer, producer and co-performer (with Mary Black) of “A Woman’s Heart”, the Title track for the best-selling Irish album in Irish history. The song makes regular appearances on screen, most recently in 2019, in the award-winning TV show, “Derry Girls.”
The Eleanor McEvoy song, “Sophie” is used internationally in Treatment Centres for patients with eating disorders and was described by The Guardian as “an anthem that is touching, inspiring and consoling thousands of anorexic girls around the world.”
The sixteenth Eleanor McEvoy Album, entitled “Gimme Some Wine”, received enthusiastic acclaim on its release, featuring co-writes with legendary Irish songwriter, Paul Brady, and Dave Rotheray of The Beautiful South. Eleanor also performs a mean version of the Sixties anti- war Song, “Eve of Destruction”, written by P F Sloane, but with an additional two Eleanor-written verses, updated to the present day.
